Steve's flair and immense talent for design has given us our "dream home", he has taken advantage of every view, whether sea or rural, and has created the "wow" factor. Our house is practical, spacious and designed to catch the sun all day. The plans he gave our builder were meticulous. Having had Steve design my first home some 15 years ago, we had no hesitation in approaching Steve to design our second new home. Steve's professional skills and advice will turn an initial idea into a positive pain free reality by offering a range of interesting and practical ideas and solutions to fit the individual needs. Steve is genuinely interested in the build process from start to finish and is happy to oversee the project offering sound advice along the way. Steve and Mark Kokich (builder) have an excellent understanding and relationship with each other and this minimises any undue stress placed on the Client. This partnership creates trust and clear understanding by all parties. The end result, a happy Client with a great quality home with plenty of individuality would do it again.
We cannot recommend Steve more highly. From the moment we met Steve he made a point of listening to what we wanted to achieve with our new home. He designed a home for us that work superbly for its beach location, so much that we have moved in permanently. Steve's abilities did not stop at design, he recommended a builder Mark Kokich, who was also first class and brilliant to work with, he handled the Council and was always on hand if we needed to talk to him. Steve is one of those designers who truly want to help his Clients as opposed to telling them what he wants to design. If you need a house or renovation done use him and Mark, for that matter you will not be disappointed.
Steve Povey's design for our split-level 300m2 home on a north-facing slope on Whatitiri, at Maungatapere, used the land, location, shelter and views wonderfully well. All rooms get some sun during the day, providing a good background temperature in cooler months. Conversely, cool air flow from the native bush behind keeps the temperature in the house moderate during hot weather. The living/dining/kitchen zone is attractive and very functional, while bedrooms/bathrooms are quiet and very practical. Other features of the design include the skylights and the vaulted ceilings, while a curved deck facing into the orchard provides an excellent indoor/outdoor flow from three sets of double doors. It is a very substantial and well-built house with design elements which have been appreciated more and more. Builder, Mark Kokich and his boys did a great job.

Mark has been our builder for our new garage and apartment, a new concrete driveway and the complete renovation of our home overlooking Whangarei harbour. All these major projects were undertaken when we were overseas for the majority of the time. A more difficult built we could not imagine and thanks to Mark's expertise and innovation they were all completed to the highest standard. Our home renovation began as a roof repair but ended up as a complete tear down and re-build taking almost two years to complete. Our directive to Mark was; at all times only the best will do, no short cuts, retain the original architectural vision and keep us in the loop at all times. Without Mark's perseverance, and great skill both as a builder and lateral thinker we most certainly would not have been able to remain overseas during this work. His ability to quickly see what needed to be done and how to implement it was very impressive while always keeping in mind the cost to do so. Our extensive renovations included replacement of a multi-level roof, recladding the entire house, complete redesign of two kitchens, two laundries, and refurbishment of four bathrooms, four bedrooms and multiple living areas, with over 1000 square feet of decking which included difficult drainage below and a large concrete deck with a glass balustrade. Mark was able to call on a team of skilled sub-contractors for the specialist areas that were also of the highest standard. The new Jacoba hardwood floor linking kitchen, dining and sunroom gives a real ‘wow’ factor to our living space. Dyanne always forwarded detailed accurate accounts every month and Mark sent photo's and telephoned on a regular basis so we always had a very clear picture how things were progressing and how the photos showed that the build quality was now in the bones of the building. Above all, Mark’s attention to detail has been the standout feature of our restoration. We are now able to enjoy a significantly improved residence in a stunning location – a testimony to Mark and his team. Thank you Mark.
